The Kithsiri Mewan Kelaniya Temple (sometimes referred to as “Little Kelani”)  is a smaller Buddhist temple just on the other side of the river from the more famous Kelani Temple near Colombo, the main city of Sri Lanka.  Both temples are surely connected and some ancient legends tell that the real power comes from this lesser popular temple and not from the other, larger and more popular one.

Kelani River at the mysteriously mystical point where you find the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara Temple (Kelani Temple) on one side and the Kithsiri Mewan Kelaniya Temple (Little Kelani) on the other.

Both temples seem to be connected  to some mysterious, mystical and mythical river cobra gods.  Many believe that in the Kelani River there live some spiritual water cobra creatures.  At night  they come out of the river to worship the Bodhi Tree. When I asked one of the temple keepers about this mysterious phenomenon, he was surprised that I knew about it.  He told me that he had not seen these creatures himself but that the head monk from this temple sees them regularly.

I am grateful to have been able to get one of the sacred leaves from this most mysterious Bodhi Tree and I am happy to be able to share it with the world.
