Although Red Sandalwood (Pterocarpus santalinus) is endemic (unique to only one designated region) to Southern India, it was while I was in Sri Lanka that this piece of sacred wood was given to me. In India, Red Sandalwood has been traditionally used as a sacred wood and priests frequently used it in rituals. There are many South Indians in Sri Lanka and so this knowledge continues to be known there too.
In India, a special paste is made from pure sandalwood and everyone knows that to put some “chandan paste” on one’s forehead (third eye) will promote a sense of calmness that will permeate to one’s inner soul. The preparation of sandalwood paste is so sacred that only the pure (the temple priests) are fit for this duty.
In Indian spiritual and medical systems (Ayurveda), sandalwood is thought to bring one closer to the divine and is one of the most used sacred elements in Ancient and present societies. Some even apply it on their bodies as part of daily ritual before starting their daily prayers.
Red Sandalwood is listed as an Endangered species, because of over-exploitation for its timber. Due to its slow growth, rarity, and beauty, it has been one of the most prestigious woods used for furniture around the world for millennia (especially for upper class and royalty in China).
Sandalwood has a distinctive soft, warm, smooth precious-wood scent. When oil is used in smaller proportions in a perfume, it acts as a fixative, enhancing the longevity of other, more volatile, materials in the composite. Metaphysically, sandalwood can have a very similar effect – to act as a fixative, enhancing the longevity of other more volatile and subtle deeper emotions. It can serve to stabilize and bring to the surface those emotions that are more delicate and pure.
SOME SIMPLY WAYS TO GAIN POWER FROM THIS TALISMAN:
- Place it at the center of your forehead, on your third eye (as to mimic the traditional application of chandan paste).
- Hold it during meditation.
- Use it as a wand to purify and bless you home.
