What would happen if, even for one moment, you would be looked upon with the eye of compassion?

Avilokitesvara is the Buddha/ Bodhisattva of mercy and compassion; the embodiment of compassion.  Avilokitesvara means “The Lord Who Looks Down (in compassion)”.

In Sri Lanka, Avalokiteśvara is also called Natha-deva (protector-god).  Although Natha-deva can help bring awareness to any aspect of life, he is especially invoked for protection of family and for healing of family problems.  He can be most quickly invoked by offering three white lotus flowers.

It is written in the Lotus Sutra (ancient sacred text) that it is “Avalokitesvara Buddha’s vow to assist sentient beings in times of difficulty and to assist you in achieving Nirvana.”

It is important to note that, although Avalokitesvara appears across various spiritual traditions, this talisman is connected to the Theravada Buddhist school because it is from Sri Lanka and since this is the tradition that has predominated this country.  Performance of miraculous powers did not play an active role in the Theravada school. Instead it is believed that the real miracle is the realization of the Ultimate Reality.

This talisman is integrally connected to the statue of Avilokiteswara in Kelani Temple, Sri Lanka.  It is your choice to connect with it in whichever manner you choose (or that it chooses from you).  If you believe in miraculous powers, you can call upon it to help in whichever manner you need.  If you want to follow the example of a simple Sri Lankan layperson, you can invoke this talisman to help you connect, heal and protect all matter related to family.  If instead you decide to follow the Theravadan tradition, then you have the opportunity to let go and surrender to the miracle of realizing that you within you lies the power to cease all suffering; within you lies the Ultimate Truth, the Ultimate Self, the Ultimate Reality, and the Ultimate Miracle.
