This talisman is from Wat Chiya Mangkalaram Thai Buddhist Temple. Also known as Reclining Buddha Temple, it is the largest Thai temple in Penang, Malaysia. It is home to a 108 ft-long reclining Buddha, the third largest in the world.
I instantly felt an incredible and unusual sense of peace and serenity in this temple. As I started my practice of pradakshina (the practice of circumambulating – walking around three times clockwise) around this majestic reclining Buddha, I began to notice that there were urns all along the back and side walls. It quickly became evident that this temple also serves as a resting place for so many cremated beings.
It was a monk who was responsible for the building of this majestically beautiful temple complex in 1845. His power to mobilize people and to get great things done with such seamless effort seemed unbelievable to people and so he soon became known as “Powerful Monk.” Today there is a Shrine built to Powerful Monk. In order to connect with his divine powers, one can purchase a little thin square piece of real gold leaf and cover a piece of his statue with it.
This talisman is an actual gold leaf that was purchased at the temple and then placed upon “Powerful Monk” in mediation, asking that he blesses whomever comes into contact with it with his divine powers. May it be so and may the powers that emerge be used to help do good.
