In our western modern culture, rites of passage have almost all disappeared.  Eliminating a rite of passage that serves to transition a young boy (usually around the time of puberty) into an adult man has left most modern-urban men lost and confused, never sure when and if they’ve become “real” men. Today’s men lack a community of males to initiate them into manhood and to recognize their new status. Too many men feel insecure and end up over-compensating in everything from too much body building to too much alcohol in order to cover up their insecurities and assert a false manhood.

I had the privilege of being invited to a gathering of 200 Sri Lankan men who had gathered for the very purpose of creating for themselves a rite of passage dedicated to manhood.  This was a group that committed to meet every day for 54 days.  Together they chanted and prepared for a journey to a sacred pilgrimage site in India called Sabrimala.  They then travelled to India and hiked for several days invoking the guidance of a certain deity called Ayyappan. Upon their return back to Sri Lanka, they had a final and closing meeting. This was the meeting that I had the privilege to attend and it was from this meeting that the Manhood Rite of Passage talisman emerged.

I felt especially connected to this group’s journey because I was also personally connected with the sacred site they had hiked to in India. While I was living in Kerala, India, I had made a personal pilgrimage to the top of this mountain.  At the top is a temple for Lord Ayyappan, I deity that I had felt especially connected to. This pilgrimage site is very unique in that it is mostly men who hike amongst other men.  Since many fathers hike up with their sons, it also serves as a special opportunity for fathers all over India to connect and bond with their sons.

The reason why so many cultures have a specific rite of passage dedicated to transitioning into manhood is because it is a crucial part of developing a healthy society. They help men connect with and develop those characteristics that display an authentic sense of manhood: confidence, trustworthiness, strength, sensitivity, humility, kindness, concern, selflessness, responsibility, contribution, productivity, respect, understanding, wisdom, self-restraint, perspective, spirituality, curiosity, vitality, health, purpose, initiative, conscientiousness and respect for women.

This talisman has the power of this group’s manhood rite of passage and the entire journey of transformation that they partook together. May this talisman help any man, and especially young adults, transition into manhood and to feel recognized and confident in their new status.
