“You should sit in meditation for twenty minutes every day — unless you’re too busy. Then you should sit for an hour.” -Buddhist proverb

Michaël leads a Buddhist Meditation to a small group of people on the beach in Arugam Bay. The meditation was recorded and is available on this page.

Listen to Michaël lead an introduction to Insight (Vipassana) Meditation to a group right on the beach in Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka.  (Duration: 45 minutes)

00:00-3:15  Intro to Insight (Vipassana) Meditation
3:15-27:00  Meditation Part 1
27:00-28:45  Stretching Break
28:45-45:00 Meditation Part 2

(This meditation is divided into two parts.  If you don’t have 45 minutes for meditation practice, it is ok to only listen to part 1 or only part 2 for your meditation practice.)

This Insight Meditation (also called Vipassana or Mindfulness Meditation) focuses the mind on what is being sensed at each moment instead of its normal obsession with the past or future. The emphasis is to place one’s attention on the sensation of breathing. As the mind wanders, one passively observes one’s thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations and surrounding environment without judging whether they are right or wrong. One then returns to focusing on the breath.

I invite you to close your eyes and envision yourself sitting on the beach sand in Sri Lanka. You are sitting in a circle with several other participants.

I asked Michaël to share something about himself and about his meditation practice.

“I was working as a cop in Belgium and decided to take a one year sabatical to travel across Asia (Sri Lanka, India, Nepal and Borneo) to learn more about my ‘inner restless monkey’ and to develop my ‘spiritual corriculum vitae.’ When I started, 3 months ago in Sri Lanka, I had just one mantra for myself: to travel with an open mind and without expectations. With this attitude, I’ve already gotten in contact with many interesting, beautiful people and places. When I ended up in Arugam Bay, some people from the guesthouse where I was staying asked if I can give some guided meditations. I thought to myself, ‘If I can teach people an interesting and useful tool, then why not.’  I can’t describe the feeling I experience when I see the peaceful and relaxed faces on the participants after the sessions. I’ve been practicing Vipassana (Insight) Meditation) and Metta Bhavana (Loving-Kindness) Meditation for 3 years. It helps me to reduce stress in my daily life, to learn more about my thoughts and emotions, to be more conscious about the present moment, and to be less hard on myself.  These are enough reasons to continue to practice.  I hope you enjoy the audio files of my guided meditations.”

Michaël  has shared his email for anyone who would like to contact him with any questions: stuer.michael@telenet.be
