The Kithsiri Mewan Kelaniya Temple (sometimes referred to as “Little Kelani”) is a smaller Buddhist temple just on the other side of the river from the more famous Kelani Temple near Colombo, the main city of Sri Lanka. Both temples are surely connected and some ancient legends tell that the real power comes from this lesser popular temple and not from the other, larger and more popular one.
Kelani River at the mysteriously mystical point where you find the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara Temple (Kelani Temple) on one side and the Kithsiri Mewan Kelaniya Temple (Little Kelani) on the other.
Both temples seem to be connected to some mysterious, mystical and mythical river cobra gods. Many believe that in the Kelani River there live some spiritual water cobra creatures. At night they come out of the river to worship the Bodhi Tree. When I asked one of the temple keepers about this mysterious phenomenon, he was surprised that I knew about it. He told me that he had not seen these creatures himself but that the head monk from this temple sees them regularly.
When I asked to find out more about these mysterious creatures, I found out something very interesting. It turns out that their great power has to do with having perfect concentration. Actually more accurate would be to have one-pointedness towards worshiping Lord Buddha. They can think of nothing else but coming to this temple’s sacred Bodhi Tree so that through it they could worship the Buddha. Their minds are never distracted from the Buddha and this is how they themselves gain god-like powers.
I spent some time walking around and round this temple’s Bodhi Tree. As I walked around this sacred tree, I was thinking about the power of these mysterious water cobras. I asked The Tree to help me choose something that would embody their energy so that people all over the world can also benefit and be inspired. Lord knows just how distracted most people these days are, especially from spiritual practices. I was in search of the talisman that would embody concentration and one-pointedness.
Of course, if nothing else, I could take a fallen leaf from this tree or simply a piece of rock from the surrounding area. All around the tree people leave behind mostly offerings of flowers. I was fascinated by the beautiful and colorful offerings all around the tree. I could also offer a flower to this sacred tree and then ask if it should be the talisman.
It soon became very simple and clear. Amongst the flowers all around the tree, there was a small but luminous pearl white Buddha Head. It was clear that the head had been broken off from a larger statue of Lord Buddha. I kept staring at it, but was hesitant to touch it.
All of a sudden, as though from nowhere, I was interrupted by a local women.
She gestured for me to take it.
“For me?” I gestured with my fingers.
She nodded with a gentle offering smile.
I knew this was the talisman to help people with concentration so that they can be less distracted from whatever will bring them true love and happiness.
