This video was taken right after a puja (ritual) that was done in devotion for Shiva, on Shivaratri (the auspicious night of Shiva), at Koneswaram Temple (an ancient Shiva temple in Sri Lanka). After the puja, the sacred flame was passed around so that everyone in attendance could receive a blessing.
Once a year (usually in February or March) it is the night (ratri) of Shiva (Shiva-ratri). There is a belief that if, on this night, one is able to focus their attention entirely on Shiva, they will be granted instant liberation. A very common way to honor and align with Shiva is to repeat the mantra “Om Namah Shivaya.”
I had the privilege of spending 2014 Shivaratri at the Koneswaram Temple (an ancient Shiva temple in Sri Lanka). I was accompanied by a local Sri Lankan Shiva devotee. Together we prepared for the all night observance by first drying lotus leaves and then individually writing on each petal with a gold pen. Upon each petal, and with devotion, we inscribed, in Sanskrit characters, the Sanskrit sacred mantra devoted to Shiva, “Om Namah Shiva.” We then offered the petals to Lord Shiva through out the auspicious night of Shivaratri.
One of the petals was taken with the sacred intention of launching it into the world so that a great number of people could also experience the power of devotion to Shiva. This talisman has triple Shiva energy. Its power first comes from having been created with devotion to Shiva. It was then offered to Shiva in a most sacred and ancient Shiva temple, while chanting “Om Namah Shivaya,” on the auspicious night dedicated to Lord Siva.
