The Sri Ganesar Court Hill Hindu Temple (Kortumalai Vinayagar Temple) is a powerful Ganesha temple right in the middle of Malaysia’s main city, Kuala Lumpur. It is the only temple in the world that conducts ‘sankha puja’ (conch shell ritual ceremony) twice daily throughout the year. This powerful puja was initiated in the year 1939.

While I was staying in Kuala Lumpur, although this temple was just a few blocks away from me, I did not know it was there until one day I was walking outdoors and saw a lineup of people that came all the way from up the hill to the main street. I knew that it was a very special day in the Hindu calendar dedicated to Lord Ganesha and so I figured there must be a Hindu temple near by. Much to my surprise I was soon to discover that not only was there a Hindu temple but a rather powerful temple dedicated to Lord Ganesh himself. What a treat: I was led to a Ganesha temple that was right in the middle of festivities honoring Lord Ganesha on his very special day.

Every year Ganesha (Vinayagar) Chathurthi falls on the forth day after the new moon in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada (usually in August or September). It is commonly celebrated for about 10 days, with the biggest day taking place on the last day called Ananta Chaturdasi.  In 2014, this very auspicious date fell on September 8th.  How lucky am I that I just “happen to” stumble upon not only a Hindu temple on this most auspicious date, while being in a predominantly Muslim country, but precisely a temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha on his very own most auspicious day of the year.

Needless to say I felt blessed. Even more so, when I finally made it through the crowd and into the even more crowded temple.  It was the perfect moment as a very powerful ceremony had just begun. Even though I could only see the ceremony and the actual deity only on the screen, I felt privileged and grateful to be able to make it past so many people and that, although having arrived at the last minute, I could still participate from inside the temple.

Vinayagar Chathurti Puja

Ganesha is the beloved elephant head God that is so easy to love and to invoke his blessings. Of all the Hindu Gods, Ganesha is perhaps the most popular.  The most easy simple explanation when asked about his energy is to explain that he is the remover of obstacles. (Although he may, also, sometimes place certain obstacles in your path in order to ultimately help you.)  And who does not want that?  Who would not want an easier ride?

After the end of the ceremony, some prasad was distributed.  Prasad is usually some food or flowers that partook in a special ritual and then as such considered to have the deity’s blessings residing within it.  Sometimes one receives even just a crumb, and even this is considered a great blessing.

I was lucky to receive a lot of prasad at the end of the ceremony. I ate the fruit, but kept some of the rind and the flowers I received.  I knew instantly that I was going to make the prasad dry so that I could share its great powers with the world.   Along with prasad, I was also offered a tiny little envelope with some vibuthi.  Vibuthi is some sacred ash that is believed to have some healing properties.  I have also kept the vibuthi as part of this talisman.

May it help to remove sorrow in your life and to increase divine Love, Devotion, and Awareness.
