Quan Yin Pouring Water

In the middle of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is a beautiful Chinese temple called Thean Hou Temple.

I had heard that on the temple grounds, set amongst rocks and falling water, was a statue of Quanyin – the Goddess / Divine Mother of Mercy. The literal translation of Quanyin is “observing the Sounds/ Cries of the world. ” “Sounds/Cries” refers to lamentations, as in the cries and lamentations of sentient being who are crying out in need of help.

When one kneels in front of the statue, it activates a lever and blessings of water begin to pour out of the Quanyin. I had felt a strong calling to go receive a water blessing from Quanyin.

On my way to this temple, I twisted my ankle.  At first it seemed as though I was not injured (it is supposedly a common thing to feel the pain much later).  I walked slowly and about one hour later I arrived at the temple.  By the time I arrived in front of Quanyin, my ankle was beginning to swell and I was in pain.  I needed a healing.   The moment I knelt before Quanyin, water indeed began to pour from her vessel.  I felt a little self-conscious, and was afraid that someone might think me crude, but I raised my foot up so that the blessed water could pour over my my ankle. When I asked her to help me, I instantly felt that she would.

I spent two more hours visiting and praying at this beautiful multilayered and highly ornate temple.  By the time I was ready to leave, I could no longer walk. My ankle seemed to have doubled in size, and the pain had at least quadrupled.  I had thought to take a cab straight to the emergency room for an x-ray but there was no cab in sight.  Although this temple is in the city, it can feel really isolated from everything because it is at the end of a winding road, atop a little hill.

After waiting 30 minutes, I decided to slowly make my way down to the main road at the bottom of the hill.  Slowly but surely I made it to the bottom and then sat waiting on the side of the road.  Several cabs drove by, but none were available.

I did not want to sound greedy, but after sitting in pain for another 30 minutes, I asked Quanyin to please help me again.  Before I could even finish my prayer, a cab was pulling over in front of me.  I did not even get a chance to see it coming. The driver even felt angelic.  “Coincidentally,” he had also been praying at the same temple and he had noticed me limping.   He was driving his taxi car, but he was off duty.  He wanted to know if I was ok and if I needed a ride.  I asked if I could be taken to the emergency room.

While driving, he somehow convinced me to wait before going to the hospital.  His rational was that if the pain was getting progressively worse, then it was most likely a sprain and not a fracture.   He suggested that we stop by a pharmacy, get some pain killers, and then go to bed.  If in the morning it was not better, then I should go to the hospital.   If it was better, it would confirm that it was a sprain, and so I should not waste time and money at the emergency since there is nothing more they could do for a sprain than to recommend some rest.

Somehow, I did not need much convincing.  It all felt so reassuring and the correct thing to do.  In any case, I was relieved to be sitting in a comfortable car and felt very happy to know that I could soon be resting in bed, while medication temporarily numbed my pain.  Before, I knew it, I was in front of my hotel room and my “angel” driver even refused to be paid for the ride.   I thanked him and Quanyin for Her Grace and went straight to bed.

I slept like a baby, but when I awoke, about 10 hours later, I was startled by what I witnessed.  My ankle had more than tripled in size.  It was unbelievably swollen.  But even more unbelievable was that I felt no pain at all.  I could touch it, swirl it, even walk on it.  No pain.  It really made no sense at all.  I was clearly injured but I felt perfectly fine.  The only thing that made sense was that it was Quanyin once more showing me her mysterious Grace. I really felt her presence (or presents).  I was overwhelmed with gratitude.

Although it took over three weeks for the swelling for go away,  I never felt any pain.  I could watch my ankle heal and the swelling gradually reduce as the time went by, but I was spared from any discomfort.

In fact, the next day I walked back to the temple.  I wanted to thank Quanyin more directly and wanted to collect some of her water so that I could share it with the world.  May the energy of Quanyin’s healing water wash over you and heal whatever needs healing through her power of Divine Mercy, Grace, Compassion and Unconditional Love.

Divine Mother archetype is one of the most universal energies represented in nearly every religion/ spiritual tradition. Many believe that Quanyin is the equivalent of Mother Mary in Christianity. Either way, there is perhaps no better time for the energy of Universal Mother and unconditional Love.

Some would argue that Unconditional Love is the most powerful and most healing of all energies.  There is no greater urgency on Earth than for more Unconditional Love, both individually and collectively. When we give it power, every human stands to benefit. Without it, sooner or later, all humans and every other life form is doomed.
