The Koneswaram Temple complex in Eastern Sri Lanka is both visually stunning and powerfully unforgettable. I had the privilege of going on an accompanied pilgrimage to this temple, not once , but on three separate occasions. The first two times I was accompanied by someone who very likely could be the most devoted person of Lord Shiva in all of Sri Lanka. It was during my first pilgrimage to this temple that I was gifted the sacred leaf that was to become the Swami Rock Tree Leaf Talisman.
In fact, my first pilgrimage to this temple completely revolved around this Sacred Tree. At this temple complex there, supposedly, was a sacred tree that grew out of the giant sacred boulder (sometimes called Swami Rock) on which the temple was built. The general public could get a close up view of this sacred tree, only at certain times, on certain days, and through an outside staircase that leads down to it.
I, through a series of some seemingly random circumstances, not only ended up having a very up close and personal connection with this tree, but also was able to obtain one of its sacred leaves.
The story (as is the case with most of the stories connected to these talismans) is so synchronistically personal and unusual, that it feels both minimizing and overwhelming to write about. In a nutshell, I had been wearing a sacred Rudrasksha Bead around my neck (as my own personal talisman) for the last previous year. Some “random” person from Sri Lanka, had come across my main profile photo on an online social network site. He claims that the bead around my neck shone through the screen and that he instantly knew he had to contact me and invite me to join him, the next day, on a 10 hour, all night pilgrimage across the country to this famous Shiva temple. The Rudraksha Bead that I was wearing around my neck is connected with Lord Shiva and is sometimes referred to as “the eyes of Shiva.” The person who contacted me had intentions to start his own healing center in Sri Lanka. He was so connected to this sacred Temple that he had been promised a seedling from this sacred Swami Tree. His intention was to plant the seedling on the land where his new healing center was to be.
In order to respectfully carry back this sacred seedling, he had rented a mini-van and gathered together several of his friends who were also healers. Somehow, within a few hours of having been contacted, I was on a 6 hour bus back to Colombo and then ended up in a mini van with several other healers, all ready to drive all night across the country, as a pilgrimage to this sacred tree.
The Koneswaram Temple complex (where this sacred tree can be found) became such a profound place for me, that I ended up driving all the way across the country two more times in order to go back to it. During the course of my three visits, I was able to collect several talismans:
Talisman #9 (Shivaratri Lotus Petal), Talisman #12 (Murugan Scarf), Talisman #38 (Shivaratri Vibhuti), Talisman 81 (Koneswaram Swami Rock), Talisman 82 (Fertility Tree Cradle) and Talisman 84 (Shiva’s Concrete Ball) are also from the Koneswaram Temple Complex.
HERE IS MORE INFO ABOUT THE KONESWARAM TEMPLE COMPLEX
In Eastern Sri Lanka, we find the sacred site where stands the ancient and sacred Koneswaram Temple. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva, in the ancient form of Kona-Eiswara (Konesar). The location of this temple is as stunning as it is sacred.
The temple was build on a natural monolith, a giant cliff rock that is believed for thousands of years to have great power. The rock forms the edge of a headland and stands high up with vertical cliffs dropping into the ocean. For at least three thousand years, the rock (also called Swami Rock) has been the site of a Hindu temple.
This mysterious rock was worshiped by the ancient people. They believed it to be a gateway between our world and the world of the Gods. The celestial or cosmic monolith reached to heaven. It was seen as a place of connection, a place of communication with the Gods. A point of access between this world and heaven. A place to honor and connect with the Gods.
Koneswaram Temple may well be the most important Hindu temple in Sri Lanka. It is mentioned in sacred ancient texts. This is the holy spot where there once stood The Temple of 1000 Pilars, a very ancient and glorious shrine to Lord Kona (Shiva). The original temple was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1624.
It is also believed that Patanjali, famous compiler of the Yoga Sutras, was born at Koneswaram Temple.
