No picture could prepare you for the extra-ordinary majestic grandeur of the Meenakshi Temple and no words could possibly describe the profundity and connection I felt while I was at this temple. The Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, India could very well be one of the most ancient, most beautiful and most powerful temples in all of India and the talisman that came from it could very well be the most influential talisman of them all.

The Meenakshi Temple was the last place I visited in India before flying out to Sri Lanka.  I had purposely taken the train from Kerala to the ancient (2500 year old) temple city of Madurai so that I could visit this ancient temple before flying out to Sri Lanka. In my heart, I feel that my prayers while at this temple greatly influenced the life changing inspiration that I would experience one week later while hiking Sri Pada Mountain in Sri Lanka.  The power that came from this temple certainly helped open me up to receive the inspiration for The Talisman Challenge.

Meenakshi is one of the names for Parvati (Mother Earth Goddess/ Shakti and consort of Shiva).  The word is derived from the Tamil words “fish” and “eyes” meaning that her eyes are like those of fish, never blinking an eye (since fish don’t have eye-lids) and so always attentively looking down and taking care of all of creation.  It is believed that Mother Meenakshi compassionately attends to everyone’s heartfelt prayers.

This temple complex is huge and the deities represented are nearly endless (there are an estimated 33 thousand sculptures in the temple).  It houses 14 gopurams (gate way towers that serve as gayeways into the temple), and the tallest being over 50 meters high.  In addition, there are two golden sculpted vimanas (sanctuaries for the two central deities).  The two central deities are Meenakshi (Divine Mother Goddess Parvati) and her consort Shiva (here named Sundareswarar, meaning handsome one who married Meenakshi).

Meenakshi Gopuram

Legend has it that this is the location for the biggest event ever to take place on earth: the marriage of  Shiva and Parvati!  It is here that the whole world gathered and Lord Vishnu, himself, not only attended but presided over the celestial marriage.  After they both left their physical bodies, they assumed divine forms as Meenakshi and Sundareswarar in order to forever reside in this divine location.  Although they both have separate shrines (thus leading independent lives), every evening, before the closing of the temple, there is a ritual procession in which the image of Sundareswarar is carried from his own shrine into Meenakshi’s bedroom so that they can be together and consummate the union.

After a long day filled with blessings tens of thousands of people, I had the privilege of witnessing this procession and being one of the few who remained til the end to take part in this intimate ritual.  This talisman was the prasad (divine offering) from this ritual.
