Mariamman is an ancient Dravidian mother goddess still actively worshiped mainly in rural areas of South India.
“Maari” means rain, and “amman” means mother. The translation would thus be Mother-Rain, but the actual meaning is closer to the Western concept of “Mother-Nature.”
Although I had previously spent an entire year in South India, it was while I was in Malaysia that I really connected with Mariamman. I connected with her name first. Mari-amman (Mari-Mother really sounded like the Christian name Mother-Mary). Here I was in a Hindu temple that was dedicated to Divine Mother, and the name of the temple sounded like “Mother Mary. I was taken by the similarities and knew deep inside that there must be a profound connection between these two.
While at this temple, I participated in a puja (ceremony). I let dry, in meditation and for several days, the blessed flowers that I received from this temple’s ceremony. This talisman has the power of Mariamman from this temple. May her eternal wisdom and grace be revealed to you as it was to me.
Part of my work in the world is as a birth worker or doula assisting women with fertility, childbirth and learning to be mothers. What a wonderful talisman this is.
