This talisman comes from a little, not so well known Taoist temple, only about 200 meters away from the very popular Thai Buddhist and Burmese Buddhist Temples. This temple may not be as popular as its other two neighbors, but my experience was equally powerful and inspiring.
While I was in Penang, Malaysia, and searching for two famous temples I happened to “randomly” discover a little Chinese Taoist temple. It was during the Chinese month of the Hungry Ghost and so quickly recognized what there was a Hungry Ghost alter set up outside the temple.
I am not sure how the average Chinese person interacts and prays to this alter, but I had my very own more esoteric way that I felt comfortable and connected with. For me, the Hungry Ghost realm is connected with the six realms (categories/ psychological states of mind) of human existence. As a human, we bounce between each of these realms, and each leading to more suffering. The goal is to move beyond these human realms, away from ignorance and into Awareness and Absolute Truth.
Without going into each of the six realms, the word that I most associate with the Hungry Ghost realm/ state of mind is insatiability. This is the basis of addictions: always needing more, never having enough. The image depicted in Buddhism for this realm is someone with a huge and empty belly and a tiny little hole for a mouth. The symbolism is that even if the urge is huge, there is only a tiny amount of nourishment that is actually able to get through. One can eat and eat (or consume and consume) but the urge does not lessen. In fact it actually continues to grow. That is the problem with all addictions. The more you give in, the larger they get. Insatiability is intricately linked to suffering. This applies to addictions, compulsions, obsessions, and negative urges, including hording.
This talisman is connected with helping to bring awareness to the areas of your life stuck in the Hungry Ghost realm. May it help elevate you to higher states of awareness and consciousness so that you can experience more Love.
