This is a leaf from what might be the most venerated tree in the world. The Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya is where The Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama) is said to have achieved enlightenment.
What makes this talisman even more precious is that is was gifted to me by someone who hardly knew me. When I was travelling around Sri Lanka, I made an effort to often stay in “home-stay” type lodgings. I stayed in Welligama for only 2 nights. When the owner of the guesthouse found out that I had been travelling around Sri Lanka collecting sacred objects, she invited me into her living room. In the corner was a little alter and on it were three laminated leaves.
Every Sri Lankan Buddhist dreams of going on a pilgrimage to India so they can worship the sacred Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya. This woman had three leaves from this sacred tree on her alter. She picked them up and asked that I take whichever one I pleased. One was bigger and in better shape than the others. I admired it, but humbly picked one of the others. She did not hesitate to rectify my mistake. She thought I should have the bigger one. “Launch this into the world,” she told me, as she selflessly handed me the sacred leaf. “I hope it protects everyone who comes into contact with it, as it has protected my family for so many years.”
May this talisman help you connect with your deepest Self, and bring safety and protection to you and to your family.
And may this woman’s humility and selflessness spill over onto whomever may come into contact with her beloved sacred leaf.
